“The answer may not be stated directly—but the clues are always there.” — Lady Flawless

🎯 Your Mission

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Recognize the difference between a fact and an inference.

  • Make a logical inference from textual clues.

  • Select evidence that proves an inference.

🎙️ Lady Flawless Intro

Lady Flawless steps forward, holding her tablet:

“Champ, people do not always tell you exactly how they feel.”

“If someone keeps checking the clock, tapping their foot, and looking toward the door, they may never say, ‘I’m impatient.’ But you can figure it out from their actions.”

She smiles:

“That is an inference—and the GED will ask you to make them.”

⭐ What Is an Inference?

An inference is a logical conclusion based on clues from the passage.

Text Clues + Logical Thinking = Inference

Lady Flawless explains:

“An inference is not a wild guess. You must be able to prove it with evidence from the text.”

🔍 Explicit Detail or Inference?

Explicit Detail

Information stated directly:

Darius looked at the clock five times.

We know this happened because the passage tells us.

Inference

A logical conclusion:

Darius may be impatient or worried about the time.

The passage does not state this directly. His actions provide clues.

📖 Original Literary Passage

Three days after taking his GED exam, Luis’s phone buzzed. The subject line of the email read, “Your Scores Are Ready.”

Luis’s thumb hovered over the screen. He walked around the kitchen twice before opening the message. After reading it, his shoulders relaxed and a smile spread across his face.

He immediately called his sister.

“Remember that graduation picture you promised me?” he asked. “You better find a frame.”

🎮 Question 1

What can the reader reasonably infer about Luis?

A. Luis forgot his GED account password.
B. Luis received a passing score.
C. Luis’s sister took the exam for him.
D. Luis decided not to read his results.

✅ Correct Answer: B

The passage never directly says that Luis passed. However, his smile and comment about a graduation picture strongly suggest that he received a passing score.

🔎 Question 2

Which detail best supports the inference that Luis passed?

A. His phone buzzed.
B. He walked around the kitchen twice.
C. He asked his sister to find a frame for his graduation picture.
D. The email arrived three days after his exam.

✅ Correct Answer: C

The graduation picture is the strongest evidence because people usually take graduation pictures after completing a program.

🧠 The Flawless Inference Method

Step 1: Read the question

Know what you are trying to discover.

Step 2: Find the clues

Look at the character’s:

  • Words

  • Actions

  • Thoughts

  • Feelings

  • Reactions

Step 3: Make a logical conclusion

Ask:

“What do these clues suggest?”

Step 4: Prove your answer

Return to the passage and identify the strongest supporting detail.

🚫 Watch Out for Assumptions

Lady Flawless explains:

“Your answer must come from the passage—not from something you imagined.”

For example, we cannot conclude that Luis earned a perfect score. Nothing in the passage supports that claim.

We can only conclude that he likely passed.
