“If you can explain a movie without replaying every scene, you can summarize a GED passage.” — Lady Flawless

🎯 Your Mission

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Separate key details from small details.

  • Summarize a literary passage in your own words.

  • Select the best summary on a GED-style question.

🎙️ Lady Flawless Intro

Lady Flawless steps forward with her tablet:

“Champ, imagine your friend asks what happened in a movie.”

“You would not repeat every word, every scene, and every outfit. You would explain the most important events.”

She smiles:

“That is a summary.”

⭐ What Is a Summary?

A summary is a short explanation of the most important ideas and events in a passage.

A strong summary:

  • Includes the main idea.

  • Includes only the most important details.

  • Uses your own words.

  • Does not include your personal opinion.

  • Does not retell everything.

🧠 Connect Mission 1 to Mission 2

Lady Flawless explains:

“In Mission 1, you found the main idea and supporting details. Now you will combine them into a summary.”

Main Idea + Key Details = Summary

🗺️ The Flawless Summary Map

For a literary passage, ask:

  1. Character: Who is the passage mainly about?

  2. Goal: What does the character want?

  3. Problem: What gets in the character’s way?

  4. Action: What does the character do?

  5. Result: How does the situation end?

“You may not need every part in your final answer, but this map will help you find what matters.”

📖 Original Literary Passage

Jamal drove 40 minutes to attend his evening GED class. When he arrived, the building was dark. A sign on the door explained that the class had been canceled because of a power outage.

Jamal sighed and reached for his car keys. Then he noticed three other students standing near the entrance. They had also traveled a long way to attend class.

“The library is still open,” Jamal said. “We could study there together.”

The students agreed and followed him to the library. They reviewed a reading passage, compared their answers, and helped one another understand the questions they had missed.

Two hours later, Jamal drove past the dark learning center again. This time, he smiled. Their original plan had changed, but their progress had continued.

🔍 Use the Summary Map

  • Character: Jamal and the other GED students

  • Goal: Attend class and study

  • Problem: Their class is canceled because of a power outage

  • Action: They go to the library and study together

  • Result: They continue making progress despite the canceled class

✍️ Build the Summary

Too many details:

Jamal drove for 40 minutes, saw a dark building, read a sign, reached for his keys, noticed three students, suggested the library, studied for two hours, drove past the building, and smiled.

Lady Flawless explains:

“That retells almost everything. A summary only keeps the most important information.”

Strong summary:

After their GED class is canceled, Jamal and the other students find another place to study and continue making progress together.

“This summary gives us the problem, the important action, and the result.”

🎮Style Question

Which statement best summarizes the passage?

A. Jamal drove 40 minutes and saw three students outside a dark building.
B. After their class is canceled, Jamal and the other students find another way to study together.
C. Learning centers should have backup electricity during power outages.
D. Jamal and the other students stop studying after their class is canceled.

✅ Correct Answer: B

Choice B includes the main problem and the most important action.

🚫 Watch Out for Summary Traps

Choice A: Too narrow

It includes details from the passage but leaves out the most important action and result.

Choice C: Personal opinion

The passage never argues that learning centers need backup electricity.

Choice D: Incorrect

The students do not stop. They continue studying at the library.

Lady Flawless explains:

“A wrong answer may use words from the passage. That does not make it the best summary.”

“Champ, you do not need to remember every word you read. Find the character, goal, problem, action, and result.”

“Then keep the main idea, choose the key details, and leave the extras behind.”
