“If you can tell someone what happened in a show, you can understand a GED story.” — Lady Flawless

🎯 Your Mission

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

  • Find details stated directly in a passage.

  • Identify the main idea.

  • Prove your answer with evidence from the text.

🎙️ Lady Flawless Intro

Lady Flawless steps forward, holding her tablet:

“Champ, have you ever watched a show and explained the episode to someone?”

She smiles:

“You probably told them who was involved, what happened, and what the episode was mainly about.”

She points at you:

“That is reading for meaning—and it is one of the first skills you need for the GED.”

⭐ The Two Reading Levels

Lady Flawless breaks it down:

Level 1: What Does the Text Say?

These are explicit details—facts stated directly in the passage.

Ask:

  • Who is involved?

  • What happened?

  • Where did it happen?

  • When did it happen?

  • What exact details are provided?

Level 2: What Is the Text Mainly About?

This is the main idea—the most important point the passage communicates.

Ask:

  • What is happening throughout the passage?

  • Which idea connects most of the details?

  • If I could keep only one sentence, what would it say?

🧠 The Power Move

Lady Flawless explains:

“Champ, do not choose an answer just because it sounds good. Return to the passage and prove it.”

Use this formula:

Answer → Evidence → Explanation

📖 Literary Passage

Read the passage:

Every morning before work, Marcus studied at the kitchen table. Some mornings, his young daughter sat beside him and colored while he practiced reading. Marcus often felt tired after working late shifts, but he continued studying because he wanted to earn his GED. One morning, his daughter handed him a picture of himself wearing a graduation cap. At the top, she had written, “Daddy did it!” Marcus placed the picture above the table and opened his book.

🔍 Find the Explicit Details

Lady Flawless asks:

Who is the main character?

Marcus

Where does Marcus study?

At the kitchen table

What does his daughter give him?

A picture of Marcus wearing a graduation cap

Why does Marcus continue studying?

He wants to earn his GED

“These answers are stated directly in the passage. You do not have to guess.”

⭐ Find the Main Idea

Ask yourself:

What is the passage mostly about?

A. Marcus does not enjoy his job.
B. Marcus continues working toward his GED despite being tired.
C. Marcus wants his daughter to study art.
D. Marcus needs a different kitchen table.

✅ Correct Answer: B

The passage repeatedly shows Marcus studying even though he is tired. His daughter’s picture encourages him to continue.

🔎 Prove It With Evidence

A strong response would say:

The passage is mainly about Marcus continuing to work toward his GED. The text explains that he feels tired after working late shifts but continues studying.

Lady Flawless explains:

“That answer works because it gives the main idea and supports it with a detail from the passage.”

🚫 Watch Out for Distractors

A distractor is an incorrect answer designed to sound believable.

Look at Choice C:

Marcus wants his daughter to study art.

His daughter is coloring, but the passage never says Marcus wants her to study art.

Lady Flawless explains:

“An answer can mention something from the passage and still be wrong. The correct answer must answer the exact question.”
